The cold wars

Do´s and don´ts från gårdagens The Times:
Do not walk in shoes that have smooth soles and avoid running. Remove snow from shoes before it becomes packed and turns to ice.

Scrape or dig away snow from paths or drives before it becomes packed down and turns into ice. If grit is unavailable cat litter can also be used to give a better grip. Do not pour boiling water on the ground as this will later turn to ice.

While the best advice is not to drive at all in bad weather, motorists should always carry an emergency winter kit. In addition to having a full tank of fuel, you should have spare anti-freeze, shovel, jump, leads, a bag of salt or cat litter, blanket or sleeping bag, water, chocolate and a toolkit. Ensure tyres are correctly inflated.

If you are stranded with the car do not leave it unless you know exactly where you are, how far it is to help and you are certain that venturing from the vehicle will improve your situation.

Only start the car´s engine to run the heater if you are sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked. Keep at least one window open slightly as heavy snow can seal a car shut.

Cold lowers the ability to concentrate, numbing the body and reducing the will to survive. Never allow yourself to stop moving or to fall asleep unless adequately sheltered.

På radion spelas just nu låten I will survive.
